Condition and Contributions of Shaanxi Merchants During the Period of the Republic of China
As an important social force during the Republic of China period,Shaanxi merchants fully exerted their influence.Despite the weak industrial and commercial foundation in Shaanxi,they made every effort to promote the social development of the province.In the 1930s,led by Han Wangchen and Xue Daowu,Shaanxi merchants intro-duced new industries from developed areas,laying a solid foundation for the start of modern industry and commerce in Shaanxi.After the outbreak of the full-scale War of Resistance against Japan,the patriotic Shaanxi merchants responded to the national call and provided assistance to the rear areas of the northwest and the front lines of the war,contributing to the victory of the resistance.At the same time,Shaanxi merchants also supported the revolu-tionary cause in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region by delivering supplies,promoting the development of industry and commerce in the border area,and helping the revolution to victory.Overall,they made tremendous contributions and efforts to the development of Shaanxi during the Republic of China period.
