Objective To explore the effect of sterilization by high-temperature steam on the disinfection efficiency and cyclic fatigue performance of otolaryngological instruments. Methods With the random selection of 260 medical devices commonly used in the otolaryngology department of the hospital as research subjects from January 2023 to January 2024,according to different disinfection methods, the instruments were divided into the conventional group and the high-temperature steam sterilization group, with 130 pieces in each group. With the use of conventional wiping disinfection method in the conventional group and high-temperature steam sterilization method in the high-temperature steam sterilization group, the disinfection effect, cyclic fatigue performance, fracture morphology observation, and sterilization qualification rate between the two groups of instruments were compared. Results The bacterial count of the instruments in the high-temperature steam sterilization group was lower than that in the conventional group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05);The number of fracture cycles(NCF)and the instrument flange length(FL)in the high-temperature steam sterilization group were higher than those in the conventional group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05);The instruments in the high-temperature steam sterilization group mainly exhibited ductile cracking, accompanied by brittle intergranular cracking, clean and smooth grain boundaries, presenting flaky brittle precipitate phase, strong multi-faceted three-dimensional sense, and distinct edges. The conventional group showed ductile cracking, obvious micro-holes could be seen at the fracture, and the fracture surface was covered with a lot of dimple structures. Conclusion The disinfection effect of high-temperature steam sterilization is good, but the long-term use of high-temperature steam sterilization method for otolaryngological instruments causes more damage to the instruments than conventional wiping disinfection method.
