Effects of the Plant Density on the Characteristics of Maize Stem and Ear
Two high-yield maize cultivars Zhengdan958 and Jinhai 5 were used for this study with two plant density treatments, medium density(52 500 plants/ha) and high-density(7 5000 plants/ha) under field condition, and the effects of plant density on the characteristics of stem and ear were studied. The results showed that the high density did not affect the plant height and ear height, and except the first internode, the length of the other internodes was unaffected by the high density, but the stem diameter of the third internode decreased. Under medium plant density (52 500 plants/ha) condition, Jinhai 5 showed higher rind penetration strength of all internodes than Zhengdan958. Under high density condition, the rind penetration strength of Jinhai 5 decreased obviously, while Zhengdan958 was unchanged, except that the rind penetration strength of the third internode decreased. The ear length, the kernel number per line and hundred-kernel weight obviously decreased under high density condition, but the two cultivars both reached the highest yield under higher plant density.
