Analyzing Combining Ability of Yield-Related Traits in Maize Ye478-Derived Lines under Different Planting Densities
To effectively utilize the density-tolerant backbone parent Ye478-related lines in the low planting density regions of Southwest China,20 hybrids were obtained based on North Carolina Ⅱ(NCII)design using the maize foundation parents Ye478-related lines,K22,Shen5003,U8112,Zao48,and Zheng58,crossed with Mo17,Qi319,Dan340,Chang7-2.Combining ability and other analyses were performed on the yield-related traits in Ye478-derived inbred lines and their corresponding hybrids under low and high planting densities across two envi-ronments.The results indicated that yield-related traits in the Ye478-derived lines and those hybrids were affected by planting density, genotype, and other factors.Zao48 and Zheng58 had positive effects on general combining abili-ty for at least four traits under high density and had higher GCA values than those under low density.Specific com-bining ability of yield-related traits for the combinations Zao48×Dan340 and Zheng58×Qi319 with the highest grain weight per ear under high-density stress were positive.Zao48 and Zheng58 showed better overall performance un-der high density compared to other derived lines, which should be mainly used in breeding for high density toler-ance and high yield.
