Regulation Effect of Deep Tillage on the Morphological Characteristics of Maize Roots in the Tumochuan Plain Irrigation Area under Increased Density Conditions
The purpose of this study was to clarify the changes of root morphological characteristics of different density-tolerant maize varieties under high and low planting densities under the two main deep tillage methods of subsoiling and deep plowing. The results showed that both subsoiling and deep plowing could increase the increase range of root indexes before silking stage and reduce the decrease range at late growth stage, and deep plowing had more obvious effect on strong density-tolerant varieties.Deep plowing could effectively alleviate the decrease of root length, number of pillar roots and number of crown roots of 1-2 mm diameter roots of strong density-tolerant variet-ies after densification, reaching 9.04,7.76 and 9.00 percentage points, respectively. Therefore, deep tillage can pro-mote the growth and development of fine roots under high density conditions, and reduce the decrease of root system in the later stage of growth,so that maize can still have a reasonable root morphology under the condition of increas-ing density.
