Interaction and Game:An Analysis of the Vassal Relationship between the Qing Dynasty and Vietnam in the Jiaqing and Daoguang Periods
The vassal relationship between China and Vietnam in the Jiaqing and Daoguang periods maintained the basic conno-tations of"the policy of appeasement","the policy of giving more and receiving little"and the"governance of the minority groups with moral values"in the previous vassal system. But the border-governance policy of the Qing dynasty was gradually weakening, the basic implications of non-interference in the previous vassal system became more obvious, such as its non-inter-ference attitude towards the civil strife in Vietnam.During this period, although the Nguyen dynasty of Vietnam acknowledged its position as a vassal state of China and actively cooperated with the Qing dynasty on such issues as trade exchanges and the suppression of bandits,it wanted to get rid of its position as a vassal state and even coveted the territory of the Qing dynasty due to its growing sense of nationhood and sovereignty. Thus, the policy of"Vietnam safeguards southwest China"in the vassal sys-tem failed in operation.Meanwhile, facing the dramatic changes in the world, the Qing dynasty and Vietnam remained conser-vative,and did not jointly work out policies against the foreign enemy, which foreshadowed the French invasion into Vietnam in the Xianfeng and Tongzhi periods of the Qing dynasty and the later dissolution of the vassal relationship with Vietnam as a vassal state of China.
