Determinants of Soil Carbon,Nitrogen Phosphorus and Stoichiometric Characteristics in the Maolan Karst Forest Gaps
This research aimed to elucidate the influential factors on soil carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and their stoichiometric characteristics under diverse canopy gap characteristics in karst forests, thereby assessing the nutrient status of soil ecosystem within these gaps. The study was conducted in the canopy gaps in Maolan karst forests, where we monitored gap characteristics(size, age and formation cause)and quantified soil organic carbon(SOC),to-tal nitrogen(TN),and total phosphorus(TP)contents. We further examined the effects of gap characteristics,topog-raphy,and light conditions on the soil carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus content and their stoichiometry. Our findings re-vealed a moderate variability in soil carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and stoichiometric properties within the canopy gaps, with values ranging from 0.10 to 1.00.The gap age showed significant differences in influencing SOC,TN,and the ratios of C ︰P and N ︰P,whereas gap size and formation cause exhibited negligible effects.Through RDA,it was determined that environmental factors and canopy gap characteristics collectively accounted for 75.07%and 72.80%of the variation in soil carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus contents and their stoichiometric characteristics,re-spectively.Topographic factors had a strong influence on soil carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, while forest window characteristics had a strong influence on soil stoichiometric characteristics. The results of the study underscore the importance of topography and canopy gap characteristics in modulating soil carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and stoi-chiometric properties. The findings underscore the age of canopy gaps as a critical determinant in the modulation of soil carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and stoichiometric properties, facilitating the enhancement of SOC,TN,C ︰P,and N︰P ratios. This study provides vital empirical support for advancing research on karst forest recovery and sustainable development.
