Status of Jingpo People's Traditional Medicine Healers in Longchuan, Yunnan
Benefit-sharing of traditional medicinal knowledge is an international negotiations focus in the Convention on Biological Diversity, therefore it is very urgent to establish some method to investigate the holders of traditional medicinal knowledge. Based on existing survey data, this census was taken with all the living Jingpo ethnic healers in Longchuan County, house by house in the fieldwork, via some ethnobiological and cultural anthropological methods such as semi-structured interview, questionnaires, and participatory observation. An operation standard for traditional healers in fieldwork is established: fees paid medical services; locals generally accepted medical practice; collection or cultivation of commonly used medical drugs. The result shows: there are 18 Jingpo ethnic healers (1 female) in 2011; the average age is 63 years, mainly senior, and the minimum age is 40 years old; on the level of education, 77% of primary and below; and the vast majority of Jingpo ethnic healers are without the legitimate medical practice identity. This study argues for the promotion of organization on the Jingpo traditional medicine theory.
