E-writing has great potential to increase the speed of teaching/learning Chinese as a foreign language,and can solve the long-standing problems of low efficiency,slow progress and low enrollments caused by the difficulty of learning Chinese characters in US classrooms.However,the best outcome of e-writing will not be achieved until the instructors can adjust class designs and rein-force communications while adapting the e-writing method.Based on e-writing,the redesigned first lesson of beginning Chinese at Brandeis University makes zero-Chinese beginners be able to communi-cate in Chinese,both orally and in writing,at the sentence level in scores of minutes.It significantly surpasses the expectations of the students,makes them so confident to learn Chinese that they believe they can surely master Chinese at a speed several times faster than the national standard,and attracts more students to learn Chinese.
