This paper selects six sets of representative Indonesian high school Chinese-language textbooks and systematically examines the illustrations by combining a multimodal discourse analysis and an ethnographic method.By analyzing the multimodal coordination degree,the ethnic characteris-tics,and religious and cultural functions,the paper has the following conclusion:these Chinese-lan-guage textbooks have some local characteristics,but there are quite a few multimodal inconsistencies,and the degree of synergy is quite low.The illustrations in China-Indonesia co-edited Chinese-lan-guage textbooks best reflect the local ethnic cultures,fairly embodying the local society and religious cultures,while the Chinese-language textbooks made in China are fairly weak in reflecting the local characteristics of Indonesia.Based on the above conclusions,the paper proposes corresponding sugges-tions for designing and using the illustrations in such SL textbooks.
