A Restudy of the Teaching Transformation of"E-writing as the Primary;Handwriting as the Supplementary"in International Chinese Language Education:Clarification of Several Misunderstandings and Doubts
With the widespread use of intelligent electronic devices, electronic writing has gradually replaced traditional handwriting, and written communication has entered an"e-writing era".Electronic writing has changed the features of writing Chinese characters and made such writing easier, which provides a basic condition for solving the difficulties in learning Chinese characters in international Chinese language education, though the scholars of international Chinese language education still have some doubts about this e-writing shift. However, several concerns about this shift merit clarification.Under the model of"e-writing as the primary;handwriting as the supplementary",the teaching of Chi-nese characters will not be abandoned but revitalized. This shift will enhance the students'literacy skills in Chinese and allows for more time and effective instruction of the implications of Chinese char-acters and culture. While prolonged reliance on electronic writing may lead to"forgetting how to write by hand",feature-based character-recognition training helps prevent"forgetting how to write on the screen"and improves their overall proficiency.Furthermore, some students who prefer handwriting will still have opportunities for"experiential writing"with adequate support. The argument that hand-writing is superior to e-writing for brain development, due to a different stimulation to cranial nerve cells, overlooks the cognitive and psychological burdens of handwriting as well as the brain's natural adaptability to historical advancements.
