As part of a major project initiated by the European Association for Chinese Language Teaching(EACT),"A National Report Series on the Recent Development and Analysis of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language(TCFL)in European Countries"is a special report on TCFL in the UK where TCFL is relatively well and balanced developed with its own characteristics in Europe.Starting with a brief introduction to the UK and the development of TCFL there,this paper first gives a rather detailed overview of the development of TCFL in the UK in the last ten years or so,covering its basic education,higher education,Chinese language education and lifelong education.It then offers a pre-liminary discussion and analysis of the characteristics,development and problems of TCFL in the UK during this development.Finally,it puts forward some personal opinions and predictions on the future trends for TCFL in the UK,especially after the"Brexit"in the hope of shedding some light on these recent developments of TCFL in the UK as well as the underlying causes.
