The Construction of National Boundaries:A Basic Project of Modern States
State boundary is the spatial result of state delimitation,and its essence is a set of institutional arrangements for a state to achieve territorial control.As a basic project of a modern state,the establishment of national boundaries has important political significance.It is the symbol of recognizing and limiting sovereignty,the main symbol of territorial allocation,the important mechanism of national security and the influencing factor of national identity.In order to realize and strengthen territorial control,the modern state creates and optimizes the territorial boundary entity as well as the legal relations,institutional arrangements and political significance attached to it.The process of national boundary construction includes four practical dimensions:treaty national boundary construction,physical national boundary construction,institutional national boundary construction and conceptual national boundary construction.
