Emergence of Woodcut Associations and War-time Activities in Yan'an during the Anti-Japanese War
Since the introduction of European woodcut prints by Lu Xun,the development of woodcut prints in China gradually gained momentum, witnessing a trend of learning, reference, and research. There was a flourishing scene.Following the forced dissolution of the earliest woodcut society,Hangzhou One Eight Art Society,in the summer of 1931,subsequent organizations such as Chun Di Art Research Society,Ye Sui Woodcut Society,Ye Feng Painting Society,Tao Kong Painting Society,Da Di Painting Society,Tie Ma Woodcut Research Society,Wood Bell Woodcut Research Society, and Unnamed Woodcut Society successively e-merged,tirelessly promoting woodcut art.The outbreak of the"September 18th Incident"in 1931 marked the blatant aggression of Japan against China, prompting young woodcut artists to create works with themes of resistance, awakening the enthusiasm of the people for the war of resistance. The organizational and resistance characteristics of these societies became two prominent features of the early development of woodcut art in China. After the resolution of the Xi'an Incident and the establishment of the anti-Japa-nese national united front, emerging prints increasingly demonstrated an irreplaceable social function in Yan'an and the broader lib-erated areas.During the war of resistance, woodcut artists, through the establishment of associations, promoted woodcut prints to the masses in Yan'an,using knives as pens, thus forming a new center for the woodcut movement in Yan'an,which spanned the 14-year history of the Anti-Japanese War.
