There has been little attention paid to the new theater movement in urban public space which is represented by Shanghai. After the Jiayin performance, the theater historians generally believe that new plays generally entered a period of decline, which was exemplified by their entry into amusement parks. However, the author studied a large number of historical materials and found that the commercial performance of new plays in amusement parks not only lasted for a long time and had a great social impact, but also gradually developed from amusement parks to the roof gardens of department stores and hotels and restaurants, which made the entire urban public sphere of the 1920s and 1930s in Shanghai as new space of the new theater movement, such as amusement parks, department stores, and hotels and restaurants, until the fall of Shanghai in the 1940s.Examining the new theater groups in this particular field is useful for studying the development of the modern theater movement in Shanghai.
