Research on the undergraduate academic mentorship system based on the Smith model
Objective Through exploring the implementation of the undergraduate academic mentorship system in medical universities,to find the problems in its operation, and propose constructive suggestions and improvement measures. Methods Based on the Smith's policy implementation model, this study investigated the undergraduate academic mentorship system in medical universities from four aspects:idealized policy, policy environment, policy implementation agencies and target objects. Results In the implementation process of the undergraduate academic mentorship system, there were some problems of high policy ambiguity and inactive mechanisms in idealized policy. In terms of policy environment, there were some problems, such as lack of complete policy system, single assessment and evaluation method and insufficient financial support. In terms of policy implementation agencies, there were some problems, such as lack of teaching staff in universities and limited communication between mentors and students. In terms of target objects, there were some problems, such as low awareness of the policy, low participation enthusiasm of the target group, and mismatch between the needs of target objects and the actual situation. Conclusions Currently, the undergraduate academic mentorship system in medical universities in China has been basically established, but there are still some issues, such as high policy ambiguity, deficiencies in organizational and institutional safeguards, and inadequate understanding of the academic mentorship system.
