Museum exhibits,whose naming follows the three-component principle of traits,material,and generic term,should perform the functions of identification and cultural representation.C-E translation of exhibit names is an interlingual re-naming process.Names of porcelain exhibits are made up of various components with condensed meanings and in many cases,complex cultural connotations.Their English translations should render both their physical traits and cultural connotations as accurately as the original names do.Based on the analysis of the naming components of porcelain exhibits,and judging from whether the translation has fulfilled its identification and cultural representation functions,this article finds that for the ordinary direct traits in the naming components,the translator should phrase accurately and properly and avoid grammatical errors;for the indirect traits and direct traits with cultural connotations,the translator should examine the cultural meaning connotated by the exhibit,instead of reading and translating the traits literally;for the exhibits of exclusive cultural origins,the translator may adopt the combination of transliteration and annotation to translate the core component.
