The year of 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Elizabeth Jolly(1923-2007).Jolley,the writer who wrote about the lives of marginal characters,discussed the process of self-identity construction of marginal characters under the multicultural background in her famous short story Five Acre Virgin and Other Stories.The author holds the view that Jolley portrayed the difficult survival situation of"the Other"women under the oppression of patriarchy and colonialism in her Another Holiday for the Prince and Five Acre Virgin.This article attempts to reveal women's obedience and defiance to the"the Other"and the tragic fate of women's difficulty in getting rid of the"the Other"cage by interpreting the two character"I"and"mother"in the short stories.
