This paper aims at exploring how to cultivate foreign language competence of application-oriented talents in higher educational institutions of China.This paper firstly makes an analysis of the demand for foreign language competence under the Belt and Road Initiative,and then puts forward with four basic elements of foreign language competence of application-oriented talents based on the review of research progress of foreign language competence.Next it discusses the current challenges faced by many colleges and universities in the cultivation of foreign language competence from the aspects of teaching concept,discipline orientation and layout,and application-oriented personnel training.Finally it proposes that higher education institutions should develop the foreign language competence of application-oriented talents by innovating college foreign language teaching concepts,optimizing discipline orientation and curriculum,and strengthening the ideological and political construction of foreign language courses so that it could adapt to the needs of colleges and universities to serve the national strategies.
