The Inheritance and Development of Confucian Musical Aesthetics in Lüshi Chunqiu:Focusing on the Ideas of Ritual Music,Confucius, and Mencius
As a comprehensive work of the musical thoughts of the pre-Qin scholars, using the monarch's governance of the country as a guiding principle throughout the book,Lüshi Chunqiu inherits and developments the Confucian mu-sical aesthetics. It inherited the Confucian idea of"politics of music",and used music as a powerful instrument of in-doctrination.Absorbing the system of ritual music, advocating that the creation and use of music should conform to the norms of"ritual".It continues Confucius'idea of"correcting music"and applies it to the implementation of music education and the role of music. But the"great music"it recommends is based on the rules of the harmonious opera-tion of the nature. In terms of the reasons for the rejection of"Zheng Wei music",the type of music to be promoted, and the connotation of music,it has different opinions from Confucius. It agrees with Mencius'people-oriented thought, considering music as one of the important elements for winning the people's hearts and implementing rule by virtue.Unlike Mencius, who emphasizes the commonality of aesthetic perception,it acknowledges the differences in aesthetic abilities and tastes among aesthetic subjects, arguing that aesthetic pleasure can only be achieved in a peace-ful aesthetic state.
