From Intelligentsia to Jinshi:The Prestige Mechanism of Ancient Artists
The reputation mechanism of ancient Chinese artists has two points:First, ancient artists need to rely on the power system to obtain reputation, and it is difficult to get a higher status in society without this system.Second, the reputation system in the Middle Ages shifted from the intelligentsia clan to the Jinshi group, which was the process of the reputation group attached to the power system. The intellectuals of Wei,Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties enjoyed a relatively independent social status.Their artists were full of self-confidence and their artistic expression was full of individuality, which laid the basic characteristics of Chinese art and aesthetics. The imperial examinations were carried out in Sui and Tang Dynasties, and the intelligentsia declined, and the Jinshi group replaced the intelli-gentsia and attracted much attention. The master's art became the expression of his official life, and painters who were not scholars gained fame through close contact with the scholar-official community.
