A Study on Translator's Behavior in Chang Ts'o's Self-translation under the Influence of His Poetry Writing
Chang Ts'o is a diasporic poet and diasporic translator of Chinese origin.His original poems and self-translated ones reflect the common wish of diasporic Chinese to search for their cultural roots and return to homeland.This paper compares the representative poems from Chang Ts'o's poetry collection"Piao Bo"(1991)with the corresponding self-translated ones from his self-translated poetry collection Drifting(2001).It is found that Chang Ts'o's poetry writing has a great influence on his translator's behavior in self-transla-tion:Chang Ts'o's self-translated poems continue the theme of expressing his homesickness and his classical Chinese aesthetic interest;however,in his self-translation,in order to reproduce the meaning of the original poems,to facilitate the English readers'understanding of Chinese culture,and to conform to North American poetics,Chang Ts'o combines the method of semantic translation with communicative translation,keeping the balance between truth-seeking and utility-attaining.
