The Embodiment of Addictive Foods——fieldwork on cab drivers'preference for betel nut
Addictive foods is becoming increasingly popular.Based on fieldwork of cab drivers'addiction to betel nut, this article examines the production and reproduction of addiction among cab drivers through the lens of dietary anthropology and the theoretical tool of embodiment. The study finds that betel nut addiction is neither a mere physical or psychological disease, nor a simple result of social construction, but rather a bodily practice and embodied experience that gradually develops through the dynamic interaction and structural complementarity of different dimensions of the body, such as the labor body, the social body, the technological body, and the medical body.By analyzing the embodied logic of betel nut addiction,we aim to enrich the domestic anthropological study of addiction.
