On the Preservation and Dissemination of Painting Theory Texts Through Engraving and Book Collecting by Jiangnan Families During the Ming Dynasty——With Special Reference to Mao Jin's Jigu Pavilion
Searching existing ancient books on painting theories,we will find all books written prior to the Ming dynasty have reached us through Ming editions.In this effort of preservation,the greatest contribution was made by the cultural elites of the Jiangnan area,who produced private engraved copies.They did not only publish ancient books but did also publish many works on painting theories of the Ming dynasty.This contributed to the dissemination of many painting ideas.There were many book collectors in Jiangnan during the Ming dynasty.Among them,Mao Jin's Jigu Pavillion,as a representative of the Jiangnan-based Ming literati who carved and collected books,played an active role in promoting the collection,preservation,and dissemination of painting theories.
