From Clan Identity to Regional Identity:Research on Chaozhou Gong-and-drum Music in the Welcoming the Immortals Ceremony
All the facets of the current Welcoming the Immortals ritual performed in the Chaoshan area, whether it be the field where the ceremony is held, the individual emotions of those partaking in the ceremony,or the music played during the ceremony,do all mark the evolution of the cultural connotations behind it,i.e.,the evolution from traditional clan sacrificial activities to folk cultural activities with strong regional flavour. The emotional experience of auditory, visual, and audio-visual integration created by the Chaozhou gong-and-drum performance in the Welcoming the Immortals ceremony enables participants with different identities to gain a sense of tradition. The high-pitched melody of Chaozhou gong-and-drum music, which has a strong regional flavour, works closely with the low-pitched percussion instruments of different timbres to form a rich polyphonic body, which greatly enhances the festive atmosphere of the ceremony.
