From Cabinets of Curiosities to Treasure Display Units:The Blending of Chinese and Western Cultures and the Creation of Illusions in Qing Palace Furnishings
As a collection display unit, the duobaoge produced during the Qing dynasty and cabinets of curiosities from Europe respectively represent the exploration and interpretation of the material world by the East and the West in the pre-industrial era. There is communication and interoperability between the two in terms of craftsmanship and design concepts. While the duobaoge exhibited the emperor's personal taste and world view,it also transformed the Qing Palace into a space filled with poetry and fantasy. This reflects the attitude of the Qing rulers towards the world as Western technology and culture increasingly infiltrated their daily lives.
