A Compilation and Textual Examination of Li Sizhen's Continued Records of Paintings
The existing volume of Li Sizhen's Continued Records of Paintings is a pseudonymous copy of a long-lost original.Since Zhu Jingxuan mentioned this book in the preface of Records of Famous Paintings of the Tang Dynasty as"an empty list of names",many later scholars concluded that this book no longer existed during the Tang dynasty. This was however a misinterpretation of Zhu Jingxuan's words, and Li's original version was actually still in circulation in the Tang dynasty. The Record of Famous Paintings of the Tang Dynasty not only quoted critical entries from Li's book but also listed twenty-five works mentioned in the Continued Record of Paintings whose painters could not be identified.Later, many books, including Records of Famous Paintings in the Past Dynasties,Facts from the Book of History and Lei Shuo all quoted Li's book.Li Sizhen's original copy was lost sometime during the Song dynasty. The pseudonymous copy Continued Records of Paintings that we know today was probably written between the reign of Lizong of the Southern Song Dynasty(1225-1264)to that of Jiajing of the Ming dynasty(1522-1566),and later became a popularly circulated text in the world.
