Epigraphic Anthologies:An Examination of the Images of Bronze Drums in Ancient Chinese Texts
Official Qing anthologies and records of inscriptions on ancient bronzes and stone tablets such as Xiqing Appreciation of Ancient Collectibles,Xiqing Appreciation Continued:First Part, and Xiqing Appreciation Continued:Second Part,as well as privately authored works like Wu Yun's Two Pictures of Urn-Shaped Ritual Wine Vessels Explained,Duan Fang's Records of Golden Tripods from the Porcelain Studio, and Li Guangting's Records of Ancient Golden Tripods, contain a certain number of images and textual historical materials on bronze drums. The overall shape and decorative features of the images indicate that the bronze drums recorded in these texts can be categorized into three types:the Beiliu type, the Lengshui Chong type, and the Majiang type, each according to the era in which it was produced. It is necessary for the historiography of bronze drums studies to include ancient epigraphic studies within their research scope.
