A Textual Study on the Compilation of Clapper Opera Works The Knowledge of Medicine and A Record of Medicinal Coincidences
Academic circles generally regard A Record of Medicinal Coincidences and The Knowledge of Medicine as important scripts of the early clapper opera genre. However, according to the engraved edition of A Record of Medicinal Coincidences recently collected by the author, published by an unspecified publishing house,is dated to the 35th year of the Qianlong reign(1770),while a handwritten copy of The Knowledge of Medicine bears the date of the 10th year of the Daoguang reign(1830).It has been found that there existed no play titled A Record of Medicinal Coincidences during the Qianlong reign, which demonstrates that the so-called A Record of Medicinal Coincidences from 1770 is actually a later fabrication. The earliest origin of this play can be traced to the novel Spring and Autumn of Grass and Trees written by Wang Jia between the 1st year of the reign of Shunzhi(1644)and the 12th year of the Kangxi reign(1673).Between the 9th and the 13th year of the Jiaqing reign(1804-1808),Guo Xiusheng,a native of Jin,adapted Spring and Autumn of Grass and Trees into the ten-chapter version of the clapper opera work The Knowledge of Medicine.Between the 9th year of the Jiaqing reign(1804)and the 14th year of the Daoguang reign(1834),later generations adapted the eight-chapter version of the A Record of Medicinal Coincidences, based on The Knowledge of Medicine.
