The Old Stories of the Imperial Secretary,compiled by Li Chuo during the late Tang dynasty,is based on the conversations of"Imperial Secretary Sir Zhang from Hedong."Given that the majority of the content in the book,including books,paintings,and sculptures,aligns with Zhang Yanyuan's Records of Famous Paintings Through the Ages and Essential Records of Calligraphy,it is reasonable to infer that"Sir Zhang"is indeed Zhang Yanyuan.The book records"Sir Zhang,"also known as Bin Hu(or Hu Bin),holding positions such as an assistant to Lu Jun,an official in Luzhou,the governor of Yangzhou,the director of the Imperial Farm,the military governor of Zhaoyi,and the imperial secretary,as well as his activities including"hiding in Putian."These records contribute to clarifying the career and the year of his demise.Furthermore,The Old Stories of the Imperial Secretary also provides rich historical materials for the study of his aesthetic psychology and aesthetic theory.
