Engaging with the World and Practical Application:Society and Culture in the Late Qing People's Mirror Pictorial
The People's Mirror Pictorial was a late Qing newspaper that,while also aiming for profit and the dissemination of art,primarily sought to enlighten the public and promote political and social reforms.The newspaper exposed the public to the corruption and incompetence of the Qing government,the urgency of social reform,as well as Western natural science and traditional culture from three dimensions:political,social,and cultural.To better disseminate the illustrations and reflect the essence of new learning,the newspaper drew on traditional Chinese painting,Western realistic printmaking,and the Tianjin school of painting style.constructing an image style distinct from the exquisite and elegant style of Dianshizhai Pictorial.
