New Interpretation of the Buddha's Sermon Image in Cave 254 of the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang——Questioning the"Karma Story of Nanda's Initiation into Buddhism"
The first narrative painting on the north wall of the main chamber in Cave 254 of the Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang, identified in the Comprehensive Catalogue of the Content of the Dunhuang Grottoes as the"Karma Story of Nanda's Initiation into Buddhism,"in which lacks scenes directly related to the story of Nanda's karma, still debates scholarly about the theme of this image. The image in Cave 254 should be a depiction of the"Heavenly Emperor's Sermon"developed based on the"Brahma's plea"schema, showing connections with the Gandhara sculptures and the theme of the"Heavenly Emperor's Sermon"in the Qiuci caves.
