Examination of the Qin Dynasty's Music Institution"Zuo Yue"as Seen in the Qin Clay Seal
The decipherment of the Qin Bamboo Slips Collected in Yuelu Academy has provided a reliable basis for the study and discussion of the Qin dynasty's music institution"Zuo Yue."By synthesizing the two Qin official clay seals,"Zuo Yue Yong Bell"and"Zuo Yue Temple Zither,"it can be inferred that the officials under"Zuo Yue"were specifically responsible for the maintenance and tuning of musical instruments, indicating that"Zuo Yue"was a music institution with an auxiliary nature. The"Bronze Weight with two Imperial Edicts"from Hua County,Shaanxi Province, unearthed early but with unclear use,is identified as a tuning tool used for the"Zuo Yue Yong Bell."Since the Han dynasty, rulers have restructured"Zuo Yue"to meet the needs of ritual and music creation, which has led to the absence of"Zuo Yue"in historical records.
