Huang Tingjian created Bitter Bamboo Shoots Ode in the Northern Song dynasty,in the early summer of the second year of the Yuanfu era(1099).Knowing the shoots,he ate them;thinking of the shoots,he yearned for them;deeply understanding the shoots,he wrote the Bitter Bamboo Shoots Ode.Huang Tingjian's disciple Liao Duo and his relative Huang Binlao were two important figures who facilitated the creation of the 0de.Since the Southern Song,documents have not only recorded the work's content,but also its collection history,its calligraphic style and seals,as well as the circumstances of its transmission and copying.
