On the Dramatic Performances of the Wenshe in Changsha
In 1913,the New Drama Comrades Association from Shanghai traveled to Changsha to hold dramatic performances, returning to Shanghai only in early 1914.This period has rarely been explored by scholars, partly due to the scarcity of historical materials and the vague comments from one of the participants,Ouyang Yuqian. In fact, after the Xinhai Revolution, the new drama market in Shanghai saw a significant decline due to changes in the city's social environment. To survive, various troupes sought opportunities outside of Shanghai.Li Junpan's Enlightened Drama Society went to Sichuan and Chongqing, and Lu Jingruo's New Drama Comrades Association went to Changsha to perform under the name of"Wenshe"(literally,"Literary Society").The remaining performance brochures and old newspaper clippings provide insights into the organisational structure of the Wenshe, and its performances at venues, such as Xiang Theatre,Shouchun Tea Garden, and Tongchun Garden.
