The "Sea Winds and Waves" Incident in "Jieyang" in the Maritime History of Dongyue During the Western Han Dynasty
During the reign of Emperor Wu of Han(141 BC—87 BC),the Dongyue participated in the Han Empire's naval expedition against the Nanyue Kingdom but withdrew midway. The reason cited was the severe dangers of maritime navigation, historically referred to as"resolving through sea winds and waves".This marks the first historical instance of attributing maritime threats to"winds and waves".Examining the season when the conflict occurred does not rule out the possibility of typhoon disasters. In fact, there are other historical examples from the Han Dynasty where"winds and waves"were used to describe the calamities encountered during sailing.Regarding the Maritime Silk Road, there are also records of"suffering from winds and waves leading to drowning".The military history term"Fubo"(subduer of waves)should be associated with overcoming"sea winds and waves".The terms"sea","winds and waves",or"sea winds and waves"also became a linguistic jargon in later historical records describing maritime affairs.
