Pu Song-ling's Writings of Faith in Guan Di——An Analysis of the Tablet Inscription
Writing of Faith in Guan Di is an important position in Pu Songling's works. In addition to Tales of Liaozhai,it also exists in the inscriptions created by Pu,mainly in five inscriptions such as Inscription on the Temple of Guandi,Baiyi Pavilion and Guandi Temple in Northern Shenma Zhuang,Monk Qi Zen and God Shu,Preface to Guan Di Temple and Guan Di Temple.By combing through Pu's writings of belief in Guan Di',we can find that these inscriptions not only record Pu's thoughts on Guan Di's belief and worship of gods, but also record some concrete activities of faith practice, mainly temple building. This kind of writing shows five charac-teristics:praising Guan Di by a variety of names;paying attention to differences, according to people;people-oriented,caring for the people;integrating Buddhism with Taoism, and coexisting in diversity;mixing history, connecting people and gods. The writing of Pu's belief in Guan Di has three meanings:For Pu himself, writing the inscription was a way to carry out his belief practice; As for the belief of Guan Di in the early Qing Dynasty,Pu's inscriptions revealed its operation mechanism in the grass-roots society by taking Zichuan area as an exam-ple;For later readers and researchers, these inscriptions were a key to further understanding Pu Songling and his time.
