The conflict between the human will and the fate is the common theme of the ancient Greek tragedy. In the ancient Greeks' opinion, the fate was the abstract concept over the human being and the gods, which was unchangeable, inexplicable and irresistible, but the tragic hero still struggled with the fate by his free will and unbending character. The tragic ending predicted that the god of the fate was very powerful and irresistible, but on the other hand,it also showed that the ancient Greeks never surrendered to the fate.Oedipus the King, written by Sophocles,is regarded as the most representative example of the ancient Greek fate tragedy. The paper aims to analyze Oedipus' tragic fate to explore the fate in the ancient Greek tragedy, and further understand the ancient Greeks' primitive view on the fate.
