Abstract
The Dead, the last novel of the Dubliners by the Irish novelist James Joyce,is an exemplmy work ofemployment of symbolism. There are names, characters, objects and scenes conveying symbolic meaning. The use of sym-bols serves to reveal the theme of the novel without being too explicit. The theme is the stagnation and paralysis of the Irishpeople, the notion of "walking dead",as well as a trace of hope for the revival of Irish culture. This paper attempts to ana-lyze symbols and their significance in terms of how they strengthen the theme of The Dead.
