Analysis on Different English Versions of Tao Te Ching on the Core Thoughts of Laotse ——Taking Waley's and Xu Yuanchong's for Example
Tao Te Ching, a classic of Chinese traditional culture, has played a tremendous role in the development of Chinese culture.It is the basis of Daoism, the most influential indigenous school of religion in China.In addition, it has exerted a direct impact on the characteristics, trends of thought and aesthetic sensibilities of the Chinese nation.Besides, it has a great effect on the world' s civilization.As a result, it is translated into many languages by a growth number of people, among which Waley' s version translated by English is accepted by a majority of people at home and abroad as well as enjoys great popularity even though it exists defects.Above all, there exist other English versions at home, such as Xu Yusnchong' s.This essay aims to make a comparison between these two versions concerning the core thought of Lsotse in Tao Te Ching so as to have a better understanding of the essence of Tao Te Ching and the implied meanings behind these two different versions.
