From Cultural Conflict to Cultural Fusion——A Thematic Study of Henry James' Two Major Works
Henry James is a great novelist,dramatist and literary critic in the 19th century.He originated the novels of "International Theme".This article through analyzing Henry James' two works of the International Theme in different stages-Daisy Miller and The Portrait of a Lady,indicates that the focus of the International Theme is varied and dynamic,instead of static.The study finds that the International Theme is expressed in Daisy Miller by the form of cultural conflict,which is resulted by different notions of hierarchy and diverse concepts for female morality.But in The Portrait of a Lady,the International Theme changes to the form of cultural fusion,which is demonstrated through the image of the heroine as well as her choices on marriage.
