Test for Collocation of "Get up" and "Get over" In Financier by Theodore Dreiser
Corpus-based linguistics opens a new field for linguistic research.Word collocation plays a central role in this field. The present paper aims at distinguishing significant collocations from insignificant ones, specifically, distinguishing "get up" from "get over".First,I introduce the definition of collocation.Second,I describe the classification of collocations:collocation can be classified in different ways. Then I illustrate two basic approaches to collocational research supported by corpus data:data-based approach and data-driven approach. In this paper,I use Z-scores.Z≥2 is used as a quantitative criteria for significant collocation in this paper. At last I make a program with Z-score to test if "get up" and "get over" are collocates in Financier, and if they are, which one is more significant. From the result of the program,we know that "get up" and "get over" are all collocates, and "get over" is more significant.
