小说《红字》是美国浪漫主义作家纳撒尼尔·霍桑的作品.小说里描述的爱情悲剧发生在北美殖民地时期的清教社会.然而,在该小说出版后的一个半世纪后,新的思想、运动、价值相继涌现,影响并改变着美国社会和美国人的精神观念.作为一种大众传播工具,电影常被看作一个社会的精神的体现和价值的导向.基于《红字》原版小说和1995导演罗兰·约菲改编的电影,本文试图在清教主义以及结局等方面比较两部作品之间的不同,并探索当代美国社会对这部小说的解读.
Abstract
The Scarlet Letter is a novel by the American romantic writer Nathaniel Hawthorne.As a love tragedy,this story took place in the puritan society of colonial North America.However,more than a century and a half after its publication,new thoughts,movements,and values have sprung up influencing and changing the spirit of the American society and the American people.As a tool of mass communication,movies could be regarded as the manifestation of the spirit and value orientation of a society.Based on the original text of the Scarlet Letter and its movie adaption by the director Roland Joffe in 1995,this paper analyzes the differences of the novel and the movie adaption in the respect of puritanism and the endings in both works with the hope to have the conclusion that how the modern American society views this story.
