Delimitation and Syntactic Realization of Secondary Predicates in Modern Chinese
To make the classification of secondary predicates in modern Chinese better conform to its distinct semantic and syntactic features,a delimitation of secondary predicates will be given with argument-sharing and the causative relation as the core. Then the syntactic representation of secondary predicates in Chinese is discussed and it is assumed that secondary predicates are generated in the complements of main predicates. In V-V(verb-verb) construction the secondary predicate is base-generated in a small clause and combines with the main predicate by successive raising;in V-de (verb-de) construction, the secondary predicate is base-generated in an infinitive TP(tense projection) and V-de is formed in the lexicon with de as an aspect particle.A further illustration is given by the analysis about the ambiguous secondary predication construction,Baoyu qileile napima, which has not been fully explained before by small clause theory.
