As the representative of the American"Southern Renaissance",Gone with the Wind creates a group of Southern gentlemen with chivalrous spirit.With the outbreak of the Civil War,gentlemen's manliness changed accordingly.The work portrays 2 male protagonists:the fallen"gentleman"Ashley,whose manliness evolves from something to nothing;the rising"villain"Rhett,whose manliness is just the opposite.Through the description of the changes of the southern gentlemen's manliness,Margaret Mitchell makes an active discussion of the rise of female's sense of independence in American Southern states in late 19th century and expresses her vision and expectation of ideal manliness,which provides enlightenment for build-ing harmonious and ideal social prospects.Such revelation is still of practical significance to the construction of civilized society in the new era.
