The Female Writing and Cultural Mentality In Wang Tao's Travels Abroad in the Late Qing Dynasty
Wang Tao,a late Qing literati, traveled westward to England in December 1867,arrived in France in 1870,and traveled eastward to Japan in 1897.He wrote his observations of his journey westward and eastward as Roaming Records and Journey to Fusang, respectively.Unlike conventional travelogues,Wang Tao extensively records the different identities of women he encountered in the West and East in his book, and differentially portrays them.Wang Tao specifically transformed"East West"and"strength"in-to"gender"issues,metaphorically exploring the ideal development path of women as a way out for late Qing China. This actually reflects the complex mentality of late Qing intellectuals facing different cultures during the transitional period, embodying their imagination and desire for national rejuvenation.
