A Contrastive Study of the Features of Moves and Metadiscursive Nouns in Conclusion Chapter of Master's Degree Dissertations Written by Chinese and International Students in China
Moves and metadiscursive nouns serve the functions of cohesively linking discourse and expressing authors aca-demic views in academic texts.By utilizing a self-constructed corpus and adopting a classification model for move structures and metadiscursive noun features,this study conducts a contrastive analysis of the use of moves and metadiscursive nouns in the conclusion chapters of masters degree dissertations written in Chinese by both international and Chinese students majoring in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.It reveals that international students exhibit less completeness and richness in move structures compared to native students,lacking necessary moves and demonstrating a lack of logicality and rigor in the internal structure of moves.Additionally,due to differences in the forms of discourse cohesion in academic texts between Chinese and international students,variations in methods for engaging with and evaluating academic viewpoints in academic texts,and in-ternational students'inadequate understanding of conventional forms of expression in academic discourse within their fields,their use of metadiscursive nouns also differs from that of native students.Consequently,it is recommended that academic Chi-nese teaching should focus on cultivating international students'genre awareness in academic Chinese and their ability to use metadiscursive nouns to construct discourse cohesion and express stances in academic texts,thereby enhancing the normaliza-tion and logicality of their conventional expressions in academic discourse.Metadiscursive nouns also differs from that of native students.Consequently,it is recommended that academic Chinese teaching should focus on cultivating international students'genre awareness in academic Chinese and their ability to use metadiscursive nouns to construct discourse cohesion and express stances in academic texts,thereby enhancing the normalization and logicality of their conventional expressions in academic dis-course.
