The Treatment of Monosyllabic-Disyllabic Synonymous Verbs In Chinese Learner's Dictionaries from a Pattern Grammar Perspective
Monosyllabic-disyllabic synonymous verbs pose significant challenges for second language learners of Chinese in terms of vocab-ulary acquisition. The differences between this type of synonyms are complex, yet the current treatment in Chinese learner's dictionaries re-mains relatively vague.Drawing upon the corpus-driven Pattern Grammar framework, this paper explores its application in handling monosyl-labic-disyllabic synonymous verbs in Chinese learner's dictionaries.Through an analysis of 11 Chinese learner's dictionaries, the paper exam-ines the treatment of 60 pairs of monosyllabic-disyllabic synonymous verbs and identifies existing problems. The study reveals that current Chinese learner's dictionaries still suffer from insufficient"granularity"and"authenticity"in presenting the differences between monosyllabic and disyllabic synonymous verbs. It is suggested that adopting a corpus-driven approach to dictionary compilation may help address these is-sues,presenting both opportunities and challenges for the reform of Chinese learner's dictionary compilation in the new era.
