The Construction of Male Characters in Kawabata Yasunari's Novels
Kawabata Yasunari is the first Japanese writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.Kawabata, who has written many books all his life, has created many vivid characters in his novels. This paper will start with the male characters in Kawa-bata's novels and divide them into four types based on age and social status:innocent youth, men who abandon their lovers,empty-hearted middle-aged men,and imcompetent old men.It is argued that the creation of male characters serves three functions:to contrast the beauty of female characters,to have a strongly autobiographical, and to reflect the realities of Japa-nese society and the lives of ordinary people in the 20th century.
