Objective To explore the effectiveness of comprehensive teaching design in improving the retention of cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR)skills in undergraduate nursing students through the reform of cardiopulmonary resuscitation classroom teaching. Methods A comprehensive teaching design combining practice while watching(PWW),game-based teaching, and intermittent visual feedback was implemented for undergraduate nursing students of grade 2021 in Capital Medical University.Their classroom skill test scores were compared with their 6-month post class skill test scores to understand their skill retention status. We compared the retention of cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills after 6 months of class between undergraduate nursing students of grade 2021 and undergraduate nursing students of grade 2020 who were only taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation via PWW method. Results The results showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the cardiopulmonary resuscitation scores in class of undergraduate nursing students of grade 2021 and their scores 6 months after class(P>0.05).The cardiopulmonary resuscitation scores after 6 months of class of undergraduate nursing students of grade 2021 are higher than those of students of grade 2020,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion The comprehensive teaching design of"PWW-Game-Intermittent visual feedback"can improve the retention of CPR skills. The teaching design is worth using in classroom teaching.
